Third telco could leapfrog competition by going straight to 5G
MANILA - The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) said on Wednesday that the third major telecommunications player could get ahead of Globe and Smart by immediately offering 5G mobile internet.
DICT acting Secretary Eliseo Rio told ANC's Future Perfect Tech Shorts that the new telco player will have the advantage of not getting bogged down by legacy equipment.
"So, that would be something that would make them more efficient in breaching or having the first ***** at 5G," Rio said.
Telcos in South Korea, Japan and China who have signified their intention to take part in the bidding for the next major telco are already testing 5G equipment, Rio said.
