Are You Emotionally Mature? Here are 7 Signs to Watch For

Discussion in 'General Chat' started by capslocked, Sep 5, 2015.

  1. Emotional maturity doesn’t always come with age. It takes work, effort, and willingness to understand yourself and your feelings. When you’re facing a challenge, your level of emotional maturity will determine your ability to cope. It is all about having specific control over your emotions and knowing how to manage yourself accordingly.

Are you emotionally mature? Here are the 7 signs:

    1. You are responsible.
When something bad happens, it is easier to get defensive, blame others, or become overwhelmed with shame. If you are an emotionally mature person, you acknowledge when you are wrong and take full responsibility for your actions. You figure out what you can do differently next time and develop a plan to do things better.

    2. You can control your emotions.
Even when you’re angry and frustrated, you don’t let emotions cloud your judgment. You know how to handle criticisms and you do not feel attacked when someone disagrees with you. You don’t cry when you don’t get something you like or hurt someone who opposes you.

    3. You are hopeful.
When times get tough, you know how to adjust and handle difficulties. You are always hopeful and believe that your life can change and get better. You know that faith, effort, and acceptance can improve your situation. You believe that the choices you made can make your life better.

    4. You live in the present.
You do not hold grudges for past actions and you don’t allow past circumstances to affect how you live now. You stop worrying about what may happen and just take actions to get started.

    5. You take risks.
You are always willing to do something out of the ordinary and take risks in career, relationships, or in making life decisions. You always pursue your dreams and purpose, even if it involves doing something a bit uncomfortable at first.

    6. You cope well with change.
You know that fear of change is paralyzing and a major threat to your success and happiness. This is why you embrace new opportunities, and you form a plan of action should changes in your life occur. You don’t resist change and you’re always willing to step out of your comfort zone. You know that taking risks shows confidence and provides opportunity for internal growth.

    7. You are independent.
Developing independence can be one of most worthwhile outcomes you can strive for yourself. It empowers you by knowing that you are in control of your own life and your own choices. You know that trusting yourself is way better than relying on someone else’s decisions.

Emotional maturity is necessary when it comes to maintaining healthy relationships and achieving both short- and long-term goals. Without it, you will not succeed in many aspects of your life.
