From attempts to take terror group ISIS off social media, to häçking into nuclear power plants, selling secrets to the KGB and accessing former UK prime minister Tony Blair’s private information, häçkers have gained a lot of notoriety. They have made governments and global blue chips look like monkeys when it comes to IT security, and they continue to scoff at the ‘establishment.’ But are they really that bad or do some of them have a point? Below is a breakdown of some of the more infamous groups and their deeds; you can decide for yourself.

häçkers live in a fascinating underground world. It’s driven by challenges and inhabited by a raft of characters who scoff at the idea of secure systems. häçkers take great pride in their ability to circumvent networks, outwit the law and reveal their latest achievements.

Occasionally they will pop up at You do not have permission to view the full content of this post. Log in or register now. and show off some ingenious tricks, make monkeys out of IT security experts and even testify on US government senate committees.

häçkers are generally a loose amorphous collective of like-minded individuals who come together at various places on the internet. Many are united by a mind-set that rebels at authority especially attempts by governments to regulate the internet. Some are in it for pure criminal gain and You do not have permission to view the full content of this post. However, not all are driven by dark motives, some are genuinely moved to make things better, and to call a halt on government attempts to restrict freedoms and to make sure the internet remains open.

Despite the fluid nature of häçking groups, collective identities have been forged and here are some, but not all, notorious häçking groups.

Chaos Computer Club
This group, formed in 1981, gained worldwide notoriety by häçking into a German computer network and debiting 134,000 Deutsch Marks from a Hamburg bank. They returned the money the next day, having proven that the system’s security was flawed.

Some members of the club were also involved in a cyberespionage case. They häçked into corporate and government computers in the US and sold the source code to the KGB. The group also used häçking to protest French nuclear testing, to You do not have permission to view the full content of this post. Level Seven Club
The Level Seven Crew is understood to have taken its name from the seventh level of in Dante’s famous poetic work The Inferno. Level Seven illegally infiltrated over 60 computer systems, including those of NASA, The First American National Bank, and Sheraton Hotels. They also broke into the website of the US Embassy in China and defaced it with racist slogans to protest the United States’ You do not have permission to view the full content of this post. The group disbanded in 2000 and are understood to have disbanded around 2000.

globalHell
This group has an interesting history. Co-founded by a Houston street gang member Patrick Gregory, who turned to computers as a way out of gang life, the group effectively took street thug life into cyberspace. The group is believed to have attacked and destroyed data on over 100 websites, caused millions of dollars in damages, and traded stolen information. He has since gone on to become an independent security consultant.

TeaMp0isoN
Started by a 16-year-old häçker the group has been responsible for häçking into Facebook, NATO, and the English Defense League. They also häçked into an email account and retrieved personal data about former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. And when Research In Motion, the company responsible for developing the BlackBerry smartphone, planned to help police during the You do not have permission to view the full content of this post. The group claims to be politically motivated, aiming to expose international governments hiding their wrongdoings.

Network ***** Program häçker Group
The Network ***** Program häçker Group (NCPH) is known to have been formed in 1994 China. In 2006, the group was thought to consist of about 10 members. It claimed that the group’s leader, Wicked Rose works for the Chinese Army. At first NCPH häçked into a large number of Chinese häçker association websites. But in 2010 it attacked the US Department of Defense and was linked with a number of notable online attacks. It’s well known the remote-network-control and network-infiltration programs it makes available for download. It is believed that the You do not have permission to view the full content of this post. LulzSec
One of the most notorious of häçking groups, LulzSec’s mottos is ‘Laughing at your security since 2011,’ which pretty much sums up what they are about. LulzSec enjoys exposing security weaknesses and flaws and its targets have included Fox.com, Sony, the CIA, and the FBI. They are said to have caused billions of dollars in damages. In March 2012, top members of LulzSec were arrested, after their leader code-named Sabu was arrested and subsequently gave out inside information. But just three months later, the group re-emerged, häçking into a dating website for singles in the military. It dumped over 170,000 email accounts, claiming that LulzSec was reborn.

In 1998 they targeted the computers of India’s primary nuclear facility, the You do not have permission to view the full content of this post. Log in or register now.. They broke through the centre’s firewalls, lifted five megabytes of classified files about India’s last five nuclear tests, wiped data from two servers, and posted anti-nuclear messages on the centre’s website.

As can be imagined the häçk send shockwaves around the world and caused a lot of upheaval. Interestingly, the group operated from the UK, the US, Russia and New Zealand. A short time later they häçked into 300 websites, including those of the FIFA World Cup, Drew Barrymore, Wimbledon, and the Saudi Royal Family to post anti-nuclear messages.

Anonymous
Anonymous is a huge, amorphous group of häçkers that has gained considerable You do not have permission to view the full content of this post. Log in or register now. over the past few years. In the past they have disabled web sites belonging to the FBI website, the US Justice Department, the Motion Picture Association of America, and Universal Music Group. More recently they have tracked down cyber-criminals and taken down child **** sites hidden in the deep net. Anonymous has threatened Mexican drug cartel group Los Zetas, attacked the Pentagon, threatened to take down Facebook, and waged war on Scientology. Not so long ago they promised to wipe ISIS off social media. Its motto is: ‘We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us.’

As a conclusion
In summary, these häçking collectives generally differ from cyber criminals by several degrees of magnitude. Cyber villains are in it for the money and use their skills to strip out valuable personal data from servers belonging to retailers, banks and other companies. This is why we need You do not have permission to view the full content of this post. Log in or register now.. häçking collectives could no doubt do the same thing, and it’s more than likely that some of the ‘collective’ individuals do engage in criminal activity. However by and large as groups they tend to engage in action that scores points, and to embarrass governments and authorities. There are some that have deeper motives such as the theft of commercial and military secrets and also some that are quietly sponsored by government.
