Defense Secretary Gilberto “Gibo” Teodoro on Thursday said he would like to know what was discussed by former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and Chinese President Xi Jinping during their recent meeting to check if it is a cause for concern.
“Kailangan muna malaman natin kung anong pinag-usapan para mahusgahan natin kung cause [for] concern o hindi,” Teodoro told reporters in a press briefing in Camp Aguinaldo.
(We need to know first what was discussed so we can judge if this is a cause of concern.)
Teodoro was responding to question if the meeting of Duterte and Xi is a cause for concern for the Philippines considering the activities of China in the West Philippine Sea.
“Pero inaasahan natin dating presidente ng Pilipinas, Presidente Duterte, inaasahan din natin na ang interes ng Pilipinas ay taglay niya,” he added.
(But we are expecting that former President Duterte has the interest of the Philippines.)

"I hope you will continue to play an important role in the friendly cooperation (between China and the Philippines)," state media quoted Xi as saying during a meeting held at the Diaoyutai state guest-house in Beijing on Monday.
"During your tenure as president of the Philippines, you had resolutely made the strategic choice to improve relations with China in an attitude of being responsible to the people and to history," Xi reportedly told Duterte.

Marcos added that he was certain Duterte will tell the Philippine government the details of his conversation with his Chinese counterpart and how it could affect the country.
"If that is President PRRD then good. Hindi importante sa akin kung sino, kung ano, basta't may makausap sila baka makatulong eh," Marcos had said.
(If that is President PRRD, then good. It is not important for me who, but as long as anyone could hold a dialogue, they might help.)
