Suspected New People’s Army rebels attacked a police station in Sorsogon on Monday night, wounding three policemen and a civilian in what authorities described as latest case of harassments against military and police targets in the province.

The attack prompted Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Oscar D. Albayalde to order all police stations around the country to strengthen their perimeter defenses, be on alert always and undertake target hardening measures.

Supt. Alejandro Monge II, spokesman of the Sorsogon Provincial Police Office, said that 16 rebels attacked the Magallanes Police Station in the town of Magallanes at around 7:30 p.m., with the rebels positioning in front and at the back of the station.

The attack was, however, repelled by the policemen who were manning the station, triggering an exchange of gunfire for about 10 minutes, which resulted in the wounding of PO1 Rolan Geul, PO1 Sonny Son Estera and PO1 Melvin Bartolata.

A mentally ill civilian identified only through his first name as “Luigi,” who was in the area during the attack, was also wounded.

The rebels withdrew toward Barangay Banacud in Magallanes en route to the neighboring town of Bulan, according to Monge.

The attack followed the harassments of police and military outposts in the province during the past days, which Albayalde said were tied to the upcoming 50th anniversary commemoration of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), which recently ordered rebels to step up their attacks.

Contradictory, the CPP, however, ordered the rebels to observe a cease-fire on Christmas and New Year’s Day.

“This is what we are saying, that they should maintain their alertness and hardening measures, and of course, their camp defense plan. It is good that the police station was not overran, and the policemen have managed to retaliate,” said Albayalde.

Meanwhile, a statement issued by PNP Spokesman Chief Supt. Benigno Durana said that police maneuver forces have been put on high alert for any possible tactical engagement with rebels who have been ordered to escalate attacks. Rene Acosta

“Police mobile strike forces earlier deployed to 10 provinces in Eastern Visayas, Negros Island and Bicol region have linked-up with their Armed Forces of the Philippines counterparts in an active defense posture to strengthen community defenses against the CPP/NPA,” he said.

Bicol was among the areas where President Duterte has ordered for the deployment of additionalforces in order to address lawlessness and terrorism he blamed on the communist group.

“While the PNP maintains a stiff and decisive stance against the CPP/NPA, we are keeping the doors open to all rebels who were deceived by the false promise of a just society under communist rule, and now want to lead normal lives with their families,” said Durana.

“We gladly welcome them into the folds of the law to enjoy the blessings of democracy in a free state. We call on them to lay down their arms and come home to spend Christmas with their families,” he added.
