Proverbs 22:6

King James Version

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Via GPT:

Proverbs 22:6 is a wise saying that teaches us the importance of raising our children in the way of God. It says, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” (NIV)

This verse means that when we teach our children the principles of God’s word and will, they will develop a strong character and a clear conscience that will guide them throughout their lives. They will not be easily swayed by the temptations and pressures of the world, but they will follow God’s path of righteousness and peace. They will not abandon or reject God, but they will love and serve him with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength.

The deeper meaning of this verse is that we are responsible for shaping our children’s destiny. We are not just giving them material things or worldly experiences, but we are giving them spiritual gifts and eternal values. We are not just passing on our genes or traditions, but we are passing on our faith and legacy. We are not just being parents, but we are being disciples.

Proverbs 22:6 also implies that we should start training our children as soon as possible. The earlier we introduce them to God’s truth and love, the more they will benefit from it. The more we expose them to God’s presence and power, the more they will experience it. The more we model God’s character and behavior, the more they will imitate it.

Proverbs 22:6 is a promise from God to us as parents. He assures us that if we train up our children in his way, he will bless them and protect them throughout their lives. He also promises us that if we train up our children in his way, he will use them for his glory and purposes.

On the surface, this verse is very agreeable. Who is going to dispute the value of discipline, right?

However, in reality, this verse along with other verses has reinforced child abuse and the undermining of a child's autonomy as a person. It has justified physical, mental and emotional abuse of children, as a result causing irreversible effects on the childs mentality.

This is why, if we look around us, we will find these children as adults who would deny science despite being "educated". The mentality that was instilled in them from childhood overpowers their knowledge - like those who would deny climate change, claim the earth is flat, refuse vaccinations, etc.

On the other hand, children who went against their parents belief are alienated from society, demonized, and mistreated.

See, teaching a child is a natural practice. Even animals who cant read the Bible naturally teach their young to prepare them for the world. There is nothing wrong with that. However, the problem lies in the fact that in religion, it goes far beyond preparing the young for the future. It goes further to controlling their choices and views in life, robbing them of their autonomy and forcing them to live life how others want them to live it.
