THE Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) is monitoring cloud clusters which may form into a low pressure area within 24 hours and eventually into a tropical depression over the weekend.

However, weather specialist Benison Estareja did not say whether the weather disturbance will enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) and directly affect the country.

In the meantime, the Pagasa forecaster said Severe Tropical Storm "Hanna" (international name: Haikui) continues to move west-northwestward over the Philippine Sea as it may escalate into a typhoon within the next 24 hours.

Hanna's eye was estimated at 870 kilometers east of extreme Northern Luzon while moving at 20 kilometers per hour (kph) with maximum sustained winds of 110kph near the center and gustiness of up to 135kph, the state-run weather agency said.

Pagasa maintained that the severe tropical storm would not be bringing heavy rain over the country throughout the forecast period.

"However, the southwest monsoon ('habagat') currently enhanced by Hanna, Typhoon 'Saola' (formerly 'Goring already outside PAR) and Severe Tropical Storm 'Kirogi' which is over the Pacific Ocean will bring occasional to monsoon rains over the western portion of Luzon in the next three days," Estareja said.

"Hanna is also less likely to bring rough sea conditions over any seaboard of the country through the forecast period," he added.

In general, the state weather bureau said it is the southwest monsoon that is directly affecting most parts of the country and is bringing heavy rain and gusty winds in other areas.
