Featuring a sleeker design (with distinctive looks for the LTD and the other variants), an upgraded interior, new high-tech amenities, and more powerful turbo-diesel engines, the 2021 Fortuner is set to dominate the midsize SUV market once more.
Starting with the most obvious, the 2021 Fortuner gets a sportier exterior. In the top-of-the-line LTD trim (as seen here), the SUV gets a unique aero kit, a special front grille painted black, split-type LED headlights, new LED foglights, and replaced LED daytime running lights on the front bumper. Finally, the Fortuner gets new LED taillights, a two-tone exterior paint job exclusive to the LTD, and additional chrome/black accents on the exterior.
Depending on the variant, the Fortuner comes with 3 wheel designs. The G and V models roll on 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 265/65/R17 tires, while the Q variant gets 18-inch alloys with 265/60/R18 tires. Only available for the range-topping LTD are machine-cut 18-inch alloy wheels.
Inside, some might say everything remains the same inside the Fortuner. But Toyota actually made some improvements here and there inside the SUV. It now comes with a refreshed instrument panel, an upgraded touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, LED ambient lighting (on higher-grade models), and maroon accents on the leather seats (LTD only). Audiophiles will be happy to know that a 9-speaker JBL sound system is also available on the 2021 Fortuner.
Other important features available on the 2021 Fortuner include a power-adjustable driver's seat, front-seat ventilation system, one-touch tumble function for the rear seats, steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, push-button start, wireless phone charging, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
Two engine choices are available for the 2021 Fortuner. First up is the 2.4-liter 2GD-FTV turbo-diesel which now makes 150 PS (+3PS) at 3400 rpm along with 400 Nm of torque at 1600 – 2000 rpm. This engine is available for the G and V versions of the Fortuner and can be mated to either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.
Meanwhile, the more powerful 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV is only available on the Q and LTD models. Like the 2021 Hilux, the engine gets a significant power boost as it now makes 204 PS at 3400 rpm and 500 Nm of torque at 1600 – 2800 rpm. Power is then sent exclusively to a six-speed automatic transmission, with the LTD having the option of 4WD.
Aside from giving the Fortuner more power under the hood, Toyota also gave the Fortuner better road manners courtesy of a new adaptive steering system. Called variable flow control (VFC), it allows the Fortuner to have lighter steering at low speeds and only having weighted steering at highway speeds.
Providing added security while out on the road is Toyota Safety Sense (TSS). Available only on the Q and LTD models, TSS provides the Fortuner with intelligent safety features that include pre-collision assist, lane-departure alert, and adaptive cruise control.
Other available safety features present on the 2021 Fortuner include: anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, vehicle stability control, hill-start assist, reverse camera, and front/rear parking sensors. As far as airbags are concerned, the G, V, and Q models come with dual front airbags and a driver's knee airbag. Meanwhile, the LTD comes with extra side and curtain airbags.
The 2021 Fortuner will be available in all Toyota dealerships nationwide by October 19, 2020. It is also available for viewing at the company's virtual showroom. The pricing of the 2021 Toyota Fortuner is as follows.
