Google has suspended one of Android’s biggest phone manufacturers, Huawei, from Android updates after the Trump administration barred the Chinese organisation from trading with US companies.

But what does it mean for Huawei smartphone owners?

How will my Huawei phone be affected?

Outside of the base Android operating system (known as the Android Open Source Project, or AOSP), Google currently licenses Huawei services such as the Play Store, Gmail, Google Maps and other Google apps. The ban means that Google won’t be able to license those services to new Huawei devices. Google has said, though, that Google’s services will still function on existing Huawei devices.

For Huawei users' questions regarding our steps to comply w/ the recent US government actions: We assure you while we are complying with all US gov't requirements, services like Google Play & security from Google Play Protect will keep functioning on your existing Huawei device.

Will my Huawei phone still work?

Yes. Android is open source and available to anyone to wants to use it, so the base operating system isn’t affected. Only the licensed services are caught up in the ban. Google has said that the Play Store (the app store) and Google Play services will continue to work on your Huawei smartphone (You do not have permission to view the full content of this post. Will Huawei phones still get Android updates?

Yes. Android system updates, once they’re made available to AOSP, will be available for Huawei phones. The difference is that Huawei will lose its early access to Android updates. Huawei will have to push these updates to its users itself and adapt them for its personalised user interface, which may take months. Slower updates has always been the case and is common with other Android manufacturers - but this may slow things up further.

What about security updates?

Huawei is promising to maintain regular security updates, but they won’t come directly from Google. It’s likely that they will only be able to push security updates once they’re You do not have permission to view the full content of this post. New phone, who dis?

The language of Google’s statement that “existing” devices will continue to function as normal suggests that new devices will be impacted more significantly. It’s not exactly clear where future Huawei and Honor devices stand, but it doesn’t look good.

Huawei is building its own operating system, and currently sells devices without Google Play Services in China where it is banned, but making a new OS - with its own apps - is a mammoth task and customers may not be interested - or inclined - to wait.
