Barthelemy Could See Pacquiao Stopping Broner in Six Rounds

By Ryan Burton

Rances Barthelemy (26-1-1) returns to the ring on Saturday night in Brooklyn, New York. It will be his first fight since losing a unanimous decision to Kiryl Relikh in March.

The fight will be on the Jermall Charlo-Willie Monroe undercard and his oppnent will be Robert Frankel (36-19-1).

After this fight the former Cuban amateur standout would like to face the best that the lightweight and super lightweight division have to offer.

"I want any of the big names at 135 or 140. Any of them. I would take Robert Easter, Broner, or any of the champions. I want to be a champion again," said Barthelemy.

Next month Broner returns to the ring against Manny Pacquiao in a Showtime pay-per-view event that will be broadcast live from Las Vegas, NV where Barthelemy lives.

When asked to pick a winner, didn’t hesitation in picking the Filipino senator.

"If the Pacquiao who beat Matthysse shows up versus Broner then I don't think the fight goes more than 5 or 6 rounds. I thought the Argentine (Lucas Matthysse) would give Pacquiao problems but what a performance by Pacquiao. It made my jaw drop," Barthelemy told BoxingScene.com.

The 32-year-old is extremely motivated to return to the top level in the sport. His ultimate goal is to capture a title in the super lightweight division.

"I want to be champion again. We are looking to go back to 135 first but I really want to be a champion at 140 so that I can be the first Cuban three-division champion," said Barthelemy.

Adrien Broner: Pacquiao is Definitely My Biggest Career Fight

Four division world champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner is training for the fight of his life.

Broner, under the training guidance of veteran coach Kevin Cunningham, is preparing himself at Miami Beach’s world famous 5th Street Gym for his scheduled clash with WBA "regular" welterweight champion Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao.

The contest, being carried by Showtime Pay-Per-View, take place on January 19 from MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

1.jpg

Pacquiao renewed his career back in July, when he demolished Lucas Matthysse in seven rounds to capture the WBA belt in Malaysia.

It was Pacquiao's first stoppage win since November 2009.

The fight with Broner had been discussed at various points in Pacquiao's career, but they were unable to reach an agreement on the terms.

“This fight is real important. This is a hell of a fight not only for me but for the sport. This is a fight that needed to happen for the sport and we are going to put on a hell of a show," Broner said.

“I always knew that one day I would be having fights like this. Honestly I thought he [Pacquiao] would be done with boxing by now but I always knew I would have a fight of this magnitude on this platform, pay-per-view and all and now I’m here."

Pacquiao, an eight division world champion, turned 40-years-old on Monday.

Broner is not overlooking Pacquiao. He's not paying attention to his age or past performances like last year's upset decision loss to Jeff Horn.

"I don’t know what to expect. I’m just training for the best Pacquiao. And I’m going to go out there and do what I have to do to get the victory,” Broner said.

"It’s not a mystery. He has seven losses. It’s not a mystery that he can lose but anyone can lose on any given day. It’s whoever prepares the best and I’m preparing myself to do what I need to do. I don’t care about stopping him or whether it’s a unanimous decision, as long as I’m victorious.

“This is definitely my biggest fight, biggest magnitude, biggest platform I’ve ever been on but you never know. I could probably go in there and make this look like the easiest fight of my career you just never know.”

Mayweather, Pacquiao Come Face To Face at Clippers Game

Fans thought they were watching a replay of 2015, when career rivals Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather came face to face in Los Angeles.

Both were present during an NBA game on Tuesday, as they sat courtside at the Staples Center for the Clippers-Charlotte Hornets game.

An identical meeting took place in 2015, when Mayweather and Pacquiao came together at Miami Heat game in Florida in early 2015.

In the aftermath of that 2015 game, the two boxers came together at a hotel room - a meeting which eventually led to finalizing their mega-bout a few months later.

The contest, which saw Mayweather win a twelve round unanimous decision, generated more than half a billion in revenue and set all-time records on pay-per-view.

Now there is talk of a potential rematch, if Pacquiao is able to overcome Adrien Broner on January 19th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Pacquiao will be staking his WBA "regular" welterweight title. The bout will be televised on Showtime pay-per-view.

When the two fighters saw each other on Tuesday, Pacquiao walked over to Mayweather and two boxers shook hands while greeting each other.

Jessie Vargas: Pacquiao Will Have Too Much For Adrien Broner

Former two division world champion Jessie Vargas is a common opponent for WBA "regular" welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao and former four division king Adrien Broner.

Vargas lost a twelve round decision, and the WBO welterweight title, to Pacquiao in 2016.

Last year, Vargas fought Broner to a twelve round draw in a catch-weight collision.

Pacquiao will defend his title against Broner on January 19th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, as part of a Showtime Pay-Per-View event.

Vargas believes Pacquiao will have too many attributes for Broner to overcome.

“It’s a good fight,” Vargas said to You do not have permission to view the full content of this post. Log in or register now.. “But I see Pacquiao beating him because of his speed, his endurance, his experience. His ring generalship is too much for Adrien Broner.”

“Adrien Broner takes his time and the minute that you take your time with Manny Pacquiao, he will take advantage of it and hit you with three or four punches. His speed is intense. Even if he doesn’t hit you or land punches but if he’s throwing them at you, it seems like he’s landing them.”

For his part, Vargas is still eager to get his hands on Pacquiao for a second time.

“I wanted it immediately after but they didn’t want to give it to me. You cannot push someone into taking a fight. I asked for it,” Vargas said.

“Each and every fight you look back at it and you think what could I have done differently. Each and every one of them. Even the ones you won, you say how could I look better, I’ll do it in the next fight. You just learn from it."

Manny Pacquiao Rocks, Dominates Adrien Broner For Decision

By Keith Idec

LAS VEGAS – Manny Pacquiao proved Saturday night that his knockout of Lucas Matthysse wasn’t an aberration.
pacquiao-broner-weights%20(5).jpg
The 40-year-old Pacquiao was stronger, busier and better than Adrien Broner for much of their 12-round, 147-pound title fight. Still fast and strong enough to defeat a significantly younger former champion, Pacquiao produced a convincing victory before what was announced as a sellout crowd of 13,025 at MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Pacquiao won a unanimous decision by beating Broner by comfortable margins on the scorecards of judges Tim Cheatham (116-112), Glenn Feldman (116-112) and Dave Moretti (117-111). Pacquiao’s first fight since the Filipino legend turned 40 last month was the main event of a Showtime Pay-Per-View telecast.

Pacquiao (61-7-2, 39 KOs) hurt Broner in the seventh and ninth rounds, but he couldn’t finish off his courageous challenger. Broner (33-4-1, 24 KOs, 1 NC), who has not been knocked out as a pro, seemingly settled into survival mode during much of the 10th, 11th and 12th rounds.

“I proved in my last fight against Matthysse and now I proved it again,” Pacquiao told Showtime’s Jim Gray in the ring following his win. “The Manny Pacquiao journey will still continue.

“I wanted to push more, but my trainer said, ‘Don’t be careless. Wait for him, counter,’ and that’s what I did.”

The polarizing Broner oddly told Gray in his post-fight interview that he beat Pacquiao. Broner also claimed that the judges favored Pacquiao to ensure that Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. meet in what would be a very lucrative rematch later this year.

“I beat him,” Broner said. “Everybody out there knows I beat him. I controlled the fight. He was missing. I hit him clean more times. I beat him.

“Let me let all you know, I wanna thank the whole hood who came out here. You know I beat that boy. They are trying to get that money with Pacquiao and Floyd.”

Unofficial CompuBox statistics credited Pacquiao for landing 62 more overall punches than Broner (112-of-568 to 50-of-295). Pacquiao landed more power punches (82-of-197 to 39-of-180) and jabs (30-of-371 to 11-of-115), according to CompuBox.

Pacquiao, who went off as about a 3-1 favorite at MGM Grand’s sports book, made the first defense of the WBA world welterweight title he won from Lucas Matthysse in his previous fight. Pacquiao scored three knockdowns against Argentina’s Matthysse (39-5, 36 KOs, 1 NC) and won their scheduled 12-rounder by seventh-round technical knockout July 15 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Broner suffered the fourth defeat of a pro career that began 10 years ago. He also slipped to 1-2-1 in his past four fights.

The former four-division champion settled for a draw with Jessie Vargas in his previous bout, yet still secured the biggest fight and biggest payday of his career. Pacquiao recorded a very decisive win over Vargas (28-2-2, 10 KOs) in their 12-rounder in November 2016.

Pacquiao beat Broner in his debut with Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions.

The senator/boxer wants to fight Mayweather next. Mayweather watched the fight from ringside and spoke to Showtime during the Pacquiao-Broner bout regarding a potential rematch.

“You keep asking me about Manny Pacquiao,” Mayweather said. “He needs to get past Adrien Broner first. And right now, I’m living a happy and healthy life.”

Pacquiao spent most of the 11th and 12th rounds chasing Broner around the ring. By then, a content Broner obviously was most interested in making it to the final bell.

After hurting Broner for the second time in the fight during the ninth round, Pacquiao couldn’t do it again in the 10th round. Broner wasn’t effective in that round, either.

Broner lifted up Pacquiao’s leg awkwardly early in the ninth round, which led to a warning from Mora. A straight left by Pacquiao staggered Broner with just under 40 seconds to go in the ninth.

Broner stumbled into the ropes and held Pacquiao to prevent another punishing punch. Just as Broner did when he was hurt in the seventh round, however, the challenger survived that trouble.

Broner ate a Pacquiao right hook in the eighth round, but he took it well. By then, Broner had recovered from Pacquiao hurting him late in the seventh round.

Pacquiao hurt Broner badly with a straight left hand when there were about 50 seconds left in the seventh round. Broner, who was hunched over when Pacquiao connected, held right away.

Broner covered up, which allowed Pacquiao to unleash a barrage of power punches while Broner’s back was against the ropes. Broner got out of that predicament, only to have Pacquiao follow him – first to Pacquiao’s corner and then near a neutral corner – and unload more power punches.

Broner bravely withstood Pacquiao’s attack and made it to the end of the round.

Pacquiao went on the offensive during much of the sixth round. He hit Broner with a left hand to his body early in the round that made Broner double over and move away from him.

Broner’s best punch of the round – and maybe of the fight to that point – was the right uppercut he landed just before the bell sounded. Pacquiao took that flush punch well and stared at Broner when the round ended to let Broner know he was OK.

Broner began the fourth round strong by landing a straight right hand and a left hook within its first 20 seconds. The remainder of the round was competitive, but Broner drilled Pacquiao with a straight right hand with about five seconds to go in it.

Pacquiao buzzed Broner by drilling him with a straight left hand about 45 seconds into the third round. Broner immediately held him, so that Pacquiao couldn’t follow up on it.

Pacquiao connected with a left to Broner’s body late in the third round.

Mora warned Broner 55 seconds into the second round for using his elbow against Pacquiao’s throat while they were exiting a clinch. Pacquiao later hit Broner with a straight left hand that backed Broner into the ropes, near his own corner.

Pacquiao caught Broner with a straight left hand at the 1:05 mark of the first round. Broner mostly held his ground during those opening three minutes, but he didn’t hit Pacquiao with a flush punch.

Manny Pacquiao sued; injunction to stop Errol Spence Jr. fight filed

The management firm that represents Conor McGregor is suing boxing legend Manny Pacquiao.

Paradigm Sports Management filed a multimillion-dollar lawsuit Friday against Pacquiao in Orange County civil court, claiming breach of contract, among other assertions, per the complaint obtained Saturday by ESPN.

Paradigm attorney Judd Burstein told ESPN that his client is seeking damages from Pacquiao that could reach into the eight figures. Paradigm claims it had exclusive rights to negotiate Pacquiao's next two fights and his upcoming bout with Errol Spence Jr. was brokered behind the firm's back.

In addition, Paradigm says it ρáíd Pacquiao a $3.3 million contractual advance that he has refused to return.

Paradigm is also seeking an injunction to keep Pacquiao from fighting Spence, the undefeated WBC and IBF welterweight champion, on Aug. 21 in Las Vegas. McGregor, the UFC superstar, is the most high-profile client of Paradigm, which also represents MMA stars such as Israel Adesanya and Cris Cyborg.

"Paradigm Sports' lawsuit against me has no merit. I have an absolute right under the agreement with Paradigm to engage in the upcoming bout with Errol Spence," Pacquiao said in a statement on Sunday. "If this frivolous lawsuit continues, I will be proven correct in court."

Pacquiao made news last year when it was announced that he had signed with Paradigm as its first major boxer. Per the complaint, Pacquiao signed an agreement on Feb. 8, 2020, for Paradigm and firm founder Audie Attar to be the boxer's exclusive representation worldwide with the promise that management company would get 10% of Pacquiao's fight purses and 20% of marketing, commercial and media contracts.

Paradigm claims that Pacquiao associates undermined the exclusive partnership, working on boxing deals outside of Paradigm's purview beginning almost immediately after the contract was signed -- and Pacquiao never publicly denounced the behavior. The complaint also claims that Pacquiao was negotiating on his own behalf behind Paradigm's back with a Middle Eastern prince.

Despite all that, Paradigm says it was able to negotiate a $25 million fight purse for Pacquiao for a bout with Mikey Garcia that would have taken place May 15, 2021, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Pacquiao was to receive a $5 million purse advance. That deal fell apart after Pacquiao attempted to make that $5 million advance a guarantee, even if he did not compete, per the complaint.

There were also talks about McGregor being the first of Pacquiao's two final fights, though that idea was pushed back because of a McGregor injury and his loss to Dustin Poirier in January, Burstein wrote in the complaint.

Pacquiao announced in May that he would be fighting Spence, a deal that Paradigm claims it was not involved in.

"Pacquiao knew full well that Paradigm had exclusive rights to schedule his next two immediate fights," Burstein wrote in the complaint. "Nevertheless, in bad faith and material breach of the parties' contracts, Pacquiao, upon information and belief, had surreptitiously entered into a contract to fight Spence."

Pacquiao's attorney, Dale Kinsella, issued a statement Saturday night, calling Paradigm's lawsuit "a frivolous effort to interfere with Manny Pacquiao's upcoming mega fight" and saying "it can and will fail for numerous reasons."

"Had Manny Pacquiao known that Paradigm Sports appears to have had no intention of fulfilling its contractual obligations, he never would have entered into any relationship with them," Kinsella said in the statement. "Should this matter actually proceed beyond Friday's filing in a court of law, Mr. Pacquiao will vigorously defend this action, assert his own claims against Paradigm Sports, and seek to recover his attorney's fees as well."

The complaint stated that as a result of the failed Pacquiao negotiations, Garcia, who was Paradigm's only other boxing client, terminated his management agreement with the firm.

"Paradigm is a major company, but they were just getting into boxing," Burstein told ESPN. "This is their first foray into boxing and to lose it under those circumstances is a big deal. It has very significant consequences."

Burstein said there was an arbitration clause in Pacquiao's contract with Paradigm, but Pacquiao's lawyers told him they didn't think the boxer was bound by it, which is why Burstein filed the lawsuit. Paradigm is also claiming a breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing, unjust enrichment and declaratory relief.

"It's just extraordinary to me that someone can receive $3.3 million from my client and then forget about the reason why that money was given to him," Burstein said. ... "We're [seeking] in the significant millions of dollars. Certainly high sevens or eights, to be sure."

The Athletic was first to report the lawsuit.

Pacquiao vs. Ugas Set For August 21 - Spence wí†hdráws With Eye Injury

Unified Welterweight Champion Errol Spence, Jr. was forced to wí†hdráw from his blockbuster FOX Sports PBC Pay-Per-View showdown with eight-division and former welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao on Saturday, August 21 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas due to a retinal tear in his left eye.

WBA Welterweight Champion Yordenis Ugas will step up to replace Spence and will defend his title against Pacquiao, who won that title when he defeated Keith Thurman in his last fight July 2019. Ugas was preparing to make his first title defense against Fabian Maidana in the co-feature of the Spence-Pacquiao card. Being elevated to the main event against boxing legend Pacquiao means Ugas will get a career-defining fight sooner rather than later.

Spence discovered that he had a torn retina during a pre-fight medical examination by the Nevada State Athletic Commission in Las Vegas on Monday. He flew back home to Dallas, Texas on Tuesday and will have surgery to repair the tear on Wednesday. Spence is expected to make a full recovery and return to the ring.

“It’s an unfortunate turn of events that Errol has a retinal tear and subsequent surgery has prevented him from participating in this big pay-per-view event. We wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to his return to the ring,’’ said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions. “We’re excited that Manny has agreed to move forward and Ugas has stepped up to defend his title against the man who once held the title. Ugas was in the co-feature and had been preparing to fight on this date, so he’s ready. It’s a major challenge, because now he has to make his first title defense against a boxing legend in a career-defining fight.’’

The 35-year-old Ugás (26-4, 12 KOs) has established himself as an elite welterweight since returning from a layoff in 2016 and was elevated to world champion in January after winning a WBA Championship belt by defeating Abel Ramos last September. Ugás, who is from Santiago, Cuba and now lives in Miami, Florida, was on an eight-fight winning streak before losing a narrow split-decision to Shawn Porter in a world title fight in March 2019. The Olympic bronze medalist trains in Las Vegas and owns victories over then undefeated fighters Jamal James, Omar Figueroa Jr. and Bryant Perrella, plus veteran contenders Thomas Dulorme and Ray Robinson.
