the_ungga_ungga_by_darkghast-daqu02l.png

In Philippine folklore the ungga-ungga or unga-unga of Negros (known as wuwug or wowog in Eastern Visayas) is a manananggal relative that appears similar to the penanggal or penanggalan of Indonesia and Malaysia. Like the latter, it separates at the neck and the wingless head hovers off with its glistening entrails and organs dangling in the air, leaving the body behind. But unlike the penanggal, some ungga-ungga are men. They prey on sleeping *******t women, the child inside the mother’s womb, and babies by sucking the victims’ blood. They suck the blood using their tongue which can stretch into a sharp-tipped, thread-like proboscis while perched on the roof or hovering under the house.
When *******t women and babies are hard to come by some ungga-ungga resort to attacking people at night. Despite being just flying heads with dangling entrails and organs, they can take on full grown men. An ungga-ungga will lurk near a river frequented by individuals catching fish or trapping crabs at night. Upon spotting a lone person it will tackle the victim using its hair which can grow very long and as hard as wire. With its hair the creature will try to strangle, blind, or suffocate by stuffing the victim’s eyes, nose, ears, and mouth. It will even try to drown the victim in the river or lift him up in the air and drop him to kill the victim. An ungga-ungga will leave the victim alone only if the latter proves to be too strong or is able to pull on the creature’s entrails and organs.
The ungga-ungga won’t go near a house surrounded by bamboo thickets, fearing that their hair and entrails might get entangled among the thorns.
