crumble

A crumble is a dessert with a crumbly topping consisting of flour, butter, sugar, and sometimes oats, typically baked over either apple or rhubarb. Other fruit or even savoury fillings may also be served. As a dessert, crumbles are traditionally served with custard, cream, or ice cream.
Crumbles became popular in Britain during World War II, when the topping was an economical alternative to pies due to shortages of pastry ingredients as the result of rationing. Crumbles in varying forms are common in Britain, Ireland, and across the Commonwealth of Nations. While the dish is also found in the US, a similar dessert known as an "apple crisp" bears the same name in American English.
