Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executives Ricky Vargas and Patrick Gregorio had a fruitful meeting with the Los Angeles Lakers’ top brass as well as with Mike Clarkson, the father of Filipino-American NBA player Jordan Clarkson, on Saturday regarding the player’s availability for the Philippine national men’s basketball team for the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship.

The SBP vice chairman Vargas relayed that Clarkson’s involvement with the Gilas Pilipinas national team is becoming more concrete after the Philippine basketball officials’ meeting with Lakers president and part-owner Jeannie Buss and general manager Mitch Kupchak.

“It’s still a work in progress but with better clarity. We met with Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak and Jeannie Buss, Lakers president/owner. There were no objections for Jordan to play for the national team long term, but for FIBA Asia, we continue to discuss availability,” Vargas wrote in a text message to InterAksyon.com.

According to Vargas, they are seeking approval for Clarkson to be available for the Philippine team for the following dates: September 28, which falls on the Lakers’ media day, and for the crucial stretch of games from October 1 to 3, which would be dates for the quarterfinal, semifinal and finals of the FIBA Asia Championship.

The Lakers’ training camp in Hawaii opens on September 29 and will run through to October 7.

The NBA team’s executives requested some time to speak to the coaches about the SBP’s plea.

Vargas added they also have a very positive dinner meeting with Clarkson’s father Mike, who had previously stated that the timing for a Gilas stint for his son Jordan could not be worse.

The elder Clarkson was appreciative of the reception his son has received from Gilas Pilipinas and from the Please or Register to view links basketball faithful as well.

“They asked to review the arrangement and wanted assurance that we secure Lakers permission to allow him to skip three days of training camp,” added Vargas.

This developed as the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas continues to work on a tight schedule trying to assure the eligibility of Clarkson to suit for the Philippines in the FIBA Asia tilt.

The FIBA deadline for submission of lineups is on September 8.

“SBP executive director Sonny Barrios is now in FIBA headquarters in Geneva seeking FIBA clearance for Clarkson’s eligibility,” Vargas said.
