It turns out that we don’t have to wait for some high-tech futuristic age to appear before we can all start using holographic projecters. Some genius out there has worked out how to make one today — using nothing more than an ordinary smartphone and a cheap CD case.

It’s really easy to do. And we guarantee that you’ll be as captivated by the result as any wide-eyed child!

You will need:
  • A clear plastic CD case
  • An ordinary craft knife, glass cutter or scalpel
  • Scissors
  • Squared/graph paper
  • A ruler
  • Scotch tape/sellotape or some super glue
  • A pen
  • Your smartphone
Time required: 25-30 minutes.

How to make a 3D projector

Step 1

Draw a trapezoid with dimensions of 1 cm (on the top) x 3.5 cm (height) x 6 cm (the base) on graph paper. Cut it out using scissors.

Step 2

Separate the parts of the CD case and remove the thin edges until you end up with a flat piece of plastic. Place the paper template of the trapezoid on it, and trace the outline with a pen. Cut the trapezoid out of the CD case using your scalpel or glass cutter. Then trace and cut out three more identical shapes.

Step 3

Stick the four pieces of trapezoid together along their longer sides using scotch tape or super glue.

Step 4

Launch one of the videos specially created for the projector on your smartphone. There are several different ones to choose from, but we think the best is the one featuring a beautiful and mysterious jellyfish as well as Greta Garbo, which can be found here, whilst here you can find a funny motivational speech from Shia LaBeouf.

Step 5

Place the projector on your smartphone...and wait for your jaw to drop in amazement! Just look at that jellyfish!

The whole process is explained in an easy to understand way in this short video.

...We can’t wait to get home from work to try it!
