Gilas Pilipinas bounced back from its first setback – a loss to South Korea in the William Jones Cup Invitational, with a victory over Russian club Spartak Primorye (85-71) on Tuesday, September 1 at the Xinchuang Gymnasium in New Taipei City, Taiwan.

Spartak Primorye built a reputation as a very physical team in the tournament and just like their previous games, they engaged the Philippine team in a physical match, but the latter did not let their opponents’ height and strength overpower them.

He said: “It wasn’t a polished performance, but everybody stepped up and did what they had to do. We played within our roles pretty well – the shooters making their shots and rebounders getting their rebounds.

“Defensively we were tough. It still had some lapses, but the guys did a good job,” the American-Kiwi coach added.

In a previous interview, Baldwin said he knows that the current Gilas Pilipinas pool still has a long way to go.

Gilas Pilipinas is set to face Japan at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, September 2.

After the William Jones Cup Invitational, Gilas Pilipinas will open its campaign in the 2015 FIBA Asia Men’s Championship against Palestine at the Changsha Social Work College gymnasium on September 23
