Foods That Help Remove Dark Circles Under Your Eyes

Dark circles are endearing on a panda and on a raccoon. Looking back at you in the mirror? Not so much. These natural remedies can help you get rid of—rather than just cover up—those pesky dark circles for good.

Cucumbers

Cucumbers over the eyes are a classic spa treatment, and it turns out they aren't just for show. They actually soothe the inflammation that causes puffiness and dark circles. "Scientists have found that cucumber contains various antioxidants such as cucurbitacins, vitexin, orientin, and isoscoparin, not to mention vitamins C and K, all of which help reduce discoloration under the eyes," says Jeanette Jacknin, a holistic dermatologist and author of the in-home treatment guide Smart Medicine for Your Skin. Jacknin recommends chilling the cucumbers to maximize the effect. "The cool temperature reduces the accumulation of fluid under the eyes," she says.

Potatoes

Don't have cucumbers on hand? No problem. Jacknin says potatoes work just as well—possibly even better because they can stay cold for longer. And if you know how to grow potatoes at home, even better! They also have lots of vitamin C and other skin-nourishing nutrients that make them a great choice for soothing the irritated area beneath the eyes. To try Jacknin's method, put a potato in the freezer for 30 minutes, remove, and cut it into thin slices. Lie down and place a slice of chilled potato over each eye, covering the dark area underneath, for about 15 minutes.

Green Tea Bags

Not into putting produce on your eyes? You can use tea bags as cold compresses, too. Not only will the cold temperature reduce puffiness, but research shows green tea also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help calm sensitive skin. Green tea is used in many cosmetic creams to help increase blood circulation and slow the appearance of aging.

Avocado

Jacknin says avocados may help dark circles disappear if they're caused by dehydrated skin. "The nutritional fatty acids of avocados bring back moisture and elasticity to dry skin. They also stimulate blood circulation all around the eye, making dark circles and puffiness less intense," she explains. Make an avocado mask by mashing one ripe avocado, a half-cup of oats, and 2 tablespoons of honey. Coat face and wash off after 10 to 15 minutes.

Hectic schedules often lead to dark circles and as for your case, sunken or puffy eyes.
Cucumbers are an easy and quick way to relive the eyes from dull and dark-looking skin. The cooling properties along with antioxidants and silica present in cucumbers help rejuvenate the skin. It also reduces the water retention and hence controls the puffiness under the eyes.

Steps:

When at home :

Use 2 cucumber slices and place them on your eyelids for 20 minutes. This would help soothe the dark circles and puffiness immediately.

When at the workplace :

You could also crush some cucumber juice and soak cotton balls. Apply these cotton balls on your eyes. Or you could simply splash some cucumber juice around the eyes.
