MANILA, Philippines — Further escalation in the contested waters of the South China Sea, like an armed attack on the Philippine vessels, would trigger the country’s Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) with the United States. The US Defense Department, in a statement, said Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin III made the pronouncement after speaking with Philippine Defense Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. on Tuesday. Austin and Galvez conducted the bilateral meeting after the February 6 incident when a Chinese Coast Guard illuminated a green light twice toward the Philippine Coast Guard vessel, which was supporting a rotation and resupply mission of the Philippine Navy in Ayungin Shoal in the West Philippine Sea. The two Defense chiefs discussed...

MANILA, Philippines — The country is standing by the account of the Philippine Coast Guard that the Chinese harassed a PCG ship on Feb. 6 in Ayungin Shoal with powerful laser light, rejecting Beijing’s claim that its use of laser was meant to “ensure navigation safety.” Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) spokesperson Ma. Teresita Daza said Philippine Coast Guard vessel BRP Malapascua was undertaking legitimate activities within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone and that the CCG’s action placed the PCG crew in danger. “As far as the DFA is concerned, we have no reason to doubt the Philippine Coast Guard’s account of the incident,” Daza told reporters. “While we agree that we should continue working together, we hope the...
Warning Graphic Content: for some Monday’s quake is believed to be the strongest to hit Turkey since 1939, when an earthquake of the same magnitude killed 30,000 people, according to the USGS. Earthquakes of this magnitude are rare, with fewer than five occurring each year on average, anywhere in the world. Seven quakes with magnitude 7.0 or greater have struck Turkey in the past 25 years – but Monday’s is the most powerful. Karl Lang, an assistant professor at Georgia Tech University’s School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, told CNN the area hit by the quake Monday is prone to seismic activity. “It’s a very large fault zone, but this is a larger earthquake than they’ve experienced any time in recent memory,” Lang said. What spy balloons can do that satellites can't they cant shoot it down News that the Pentagon is monitoring a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon in the skies over the continental United States raises a series of questions -- not least among them, what exactly it might be doing. US officials have said the flight path of the balloon, first spotted over Montana on Thursday, could potentially take it over a "number of sensitive sites" and say they are taking steps to "protect against foreign intelligence collection." But what's less clear is why Chinese spies would want to use a balloon, rather than a satellite to gather information.

Why is Elon Musk telling people to delete their Facebook? Elon Musk is pointing out something we all know. Of course, many refuse to face the truth, but nevertheless, we must open our eyes. Facebook is a real pain in the ass. Facebook is hurting our society with permanent misinformation with the goal of permanent profit. Profit is not a bad thing, but when it is done at the expense of truth and society, it becomes dramatic. This is the case with Facebook. Mark Zuckerberg may have renamed the company Meta, but the goals are the same. Facebook wants to take over the Metaverse, and that's a terrible vision for the society of the future. As Elon Musk said, we must not let Meta take over that future. Removing Facebook to reduce its...
A woman who was raped or a young girl impregnated by her relative has no right to abort the unborn and must learn to live with the consequences of being a victim, according to Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso. The Aksyon Demokratiko standard-bearer took a hard-line position against abortion during an interview aired on ABS-CBN platforms on Thursday night, saying he was against it even under extreme circumstances involving sexual abuse or incest. During the interview with TV host Boy Abunda, Domagoso compared the situation of rape or incest victims to the poverty he experienced in his youth and how he rose above it, suggesting women or girls should do the same. “That’s life. I didn’t choose to be a garbage picker. I...

"Experiences from other developing countries and the European Union show that SIM card registration may pose more risks than benefits to citizens," Mirandilla-Santos who spoke on behalf of Secure Connections, a cybersecurity initiative of The Asia Foundation, told Philstar.com "There is no evidence of the benefit of SIM card registration for crime prevention," she said. Mexico also had a compulsory SIM card registration policy in 2009, but repealed it three years later after it was discovered to be...
