    VPN Troubleshooting

    Windows Users:

    Vista and Windows 7:

    -- "I cannot connect" - or - "TAP driver fails to load..."
    -- "Personal VPN connects but does not unblock web sites or change my IP..."


    This is a common error when the OpenVPN GUI is not launched as administrator
    To permanently set Vista to run OpenVPN as administrator and avoid this requirement.

    Windows Vista Setup and Operation

    Setup:

    On Windows Vista, you will need to run the OpenVPN installer with administrator privileges so that it can properly install the TAP driver which makes the VPN work.
    Right-click on the installer that you dôwnlôaded and select 'Run as administrator'

    Operation:

    After installing, you will need to right-click on the OpenVPN GUI icon and select 'Run as administrator' which allows OpenVPN to add routes to the routing tables that are pulled from the server

    To avoid having to do this every time, you can set up the file to have these permissions as your default (probably the best long-term approach to simplify Vista startup)

    Vista has a feature called UAC (User Account Control) which prevents programs running under administrator accounts from having administrator access. This feature causes OpenVPN to not run properly which is why you have to right click and run the application as administrator. In some cases, Vista is configured in such a way where the 'Run as administrator' command is ignored. Should this occur, follow the directions here to disable the UAC.

    Windows 7 Setup

    To install, the application has to be Run as Administrator:

    After dôwnlôading, right-click on the file and select Run as Administrator

    Agree to any questions that pop up. Click next where prompted.

    Note: The installation of the TAP adapter can sometimes take up to a minute. Do not exit the installer while the TAP adapter is being processed.

    Now that setup is complete you also need to set the program for Vista Compatibility mode and as Administrator:

    1) Find the file 'openvpn-gui.exe' that was just installed then right-click and select 'properties'

    You can find this file by entering OpenVPN-GUI in the search box in the Start Menu

    Right click on the file and select Properties

    2) Click on the Compatibility tab

    Check the box next to 'Run the program in compatibility mode for' and select 'Windows Vista Service pack 1'

    Check the box next to 'Run this program as administrator' and click on 'Apply' and then 'OK' to exit

    The steps above do not need to be repeated after the initial setup.
    You are now ready to launch the GUI into the system tray so you can log in
    Launch the GUI by double clicking on the desktop OpenVPN-GUI icon or from the Start Menu
    This will place the application in the system tray
    Go to the system tray, right-click and pick your connection then select 'Connect'

    Personal VPN connection options

    A window will pop up -- enter your user and password and the VPN will connect

    You know you are connected when the red icon turns green

    You can log in and out using the system tray icon as many times as you wish. If you reboot the computer or exit the application from the system tray re-launch the icon using the OpenVPN-GUI icon.

    XP, Vista, Windows 7 and 2000:

    -- "Personal VPN connects but I cannot reach the internet ..."
    Windows User: "OpenVpn connects but I cannot reach the internet"

    This is usually the result of Windows Firewall or a third party firewall that you may be running which is blocking the TAP adapter. If you are using a third party firewall, reference your user's manual on how to allow programs to pass through. In some cases, there will be a tab that lists programs that are allowed. Find 'OpenVPN' and allow access.

    For Windows Firewall:
    From the Control Panel, select 'Firewall' then 'Advanced'
    Select the connection that corresponds to your TAP adapter
    Uncheck the box next to it and select 'OK'
    Reboot your computer to ensure the setting takes effect

    If you don't know which connection that is, go to 'Control Panel' and select 'Network Connections'

    Your TAP adapter will be listed:

    One other possibility for this error is that the Windows DHCP client service is not set to start on your computer.

    From the Control Panel, select 'Administrative Tools' then 'Services' and make sure that the DHCP Client Service is started (see the image below)
    If it is not started, right click and start the service.

    -- "Bandwidth speed seems to drop or be slow ..."
    Windows User: "Bandwidth speed seems to drop or be slow....?"


    Unlike some VPN services, OpenVPN does not throttle any speeds on our end. We give you a wide open connection through the network. However, the OpenVPN application on your computer, when it installs in Windows, is given a "Normal Priority". In most cases, this is adequate. However, on some computers that have a lot of other processing going on, the processor could become highly loaded and give the VPN less processing time than it needs for optimal performance. This can be resolved by setting the priority of the application to "High". To do this, you have to edit the Windows registry. (NOTE: You should always backup the registry before making any changes to it.)

    To change the process priority:

    --Go to 'Start', select 'Run', type 'regedit'

    --Go to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE'

    --Select 'OpenVPN' and click on the 'priority' link

    --Change it to 'HIGH_PRIORITY_CLASS'

    --Select 'OpenVPN-GUI' and repeat the process

    --Exit and you are finished

    Note: On 64 bit Windows systems the OpenVPN and OpenVPN-GUI options will be under the Wow6432Node tab at the bottom of the Software list. Expand Wow6432Node to see the options.

    -- "The OpenVPN-GUI icon disappeared from the system tray..."
    Windows User: "The OpenVPN-GUI icon disappeared from the system tray."

    Occasionally, the OpenVPN-GUI icon personal vpn gui icon (2 red computers when inactive) either doesn't appear or disappears from the Windows system tray. This is a common Windows bug not associated with the OpenVPN program. If you try to launch OpenVPN-GUI again, it reports that it is already running. This is a correct report since it is running but just isn't appearing in the tray where it is supposed to. There are many recommended solutions for this which involve disabling portions of the operating system or changing registry entries. We've found a much simpler and quicker solution.

    1) Press the 'Ctrl' and 'Alt' and 'Delete' keys at the same time. The Windows Task Manager will pop up.
    2) Go to the 'Processes' tab. Look for 'openvpn-gui.exe' as shown.

    3) Select the line that says 'openvpn-gui.exe'.
    4) Click on 'End Process'.
    5) Close the Task Manager by clicking on the 'X' in the upper right hand corner.
    This will terminate the OpenVPN Gui application allowing you to re-launch it.
    6) Restart OpenVPN GUI by double clicking on the desktop icon personal vpn gui or the Start menu icon.
    This will place the icon in the system tray and you can proceed as normal from that point.

    The above illustrates this function on Windows XP. Windows Vista and Windows 7 work the same way but the screens will have the Vista or Windows 7 style and look a bit different than the image above. When initially pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del, Vista and Windows 7 will pop up a screen with several options. Select 'Task Manager' from that screen.

    -- "NOTE: FlushIpNetTable failed on interface..."
    Windows User: "NOTE: FlushIpNetTable failed on interface"


    This note can appear in the log as OpenVPN connects to the VPN server. This is not a fatal error and the connection can continue normally. It is telling you is that the ARP table was not flushed. This note occurs when the 'Routing and Remote Access' service is running on your machine. (This setting is normally set to 'disabled' or 'manual' as routing is not a normal function of a laptop or desktop computer.)

    You can ignore this in the log or you can stop it from occurring by turning off the 'Routing and Remote Access' service on your machine, assuming you are not using your computer in some sort of routing mode.
    1) Go to your Control Panel
    2) Select 'Administrative Tools'
    3) Select 'Services'
    4) Find 'Routing and Remote Access' in the list
    5) Right click and set to 'Manual' -- this will prevent it from starting up next time you boot up
    6) To stop the current operation, highlight 'Routing and Remote Access'
    7) Click 'Stop' in the upper left hand part of the screen

    -- "C:\WINDOWS\system32 route.exe failed: The system cannot find the path specified..
    Windows User:
    "CreateProcess C:\WINDOWS\system32 route.exe failed: The system cannot find the path specified"
    "ERROR: Windows route add command failed: external program did not execute -- returned error code -1"."


    This error can appear in the OpenVPN log when Windows is installed on a drive other than C or your Program Files directory is on a drive other than C.
    To resolve this issue:
    From the GUI in the task bar, right-click on the connection and select 'Edit Config'. Paste the following line on any blank line:

    win-sys env

    Save and exit
    Do this for all connection options
    OpenVPN will now follow the system path to the correct location

    This error in your OpenVPN log file indicates that there are no TAP adapters available on the system for use. The TAP adapter is required to establish the Personal VPN connection.
    One cause could be that the adapter was not properly disconnected from the previous session which could be the result of a system error or an improper shutdown - leaving it in the connected state.
    Another possibility is that the TAP adapter has become corrupted and cannot load properly. Or, was inadvertently removed from the system.
    To check on the status of the TAP adapter:
    Windows XP
    Go to Control Panel - Network Connections
    Windows Vista
    Go to Control Panel - Network and Sharing Center - Manage Network Connections
    Windows 7

    Go to Control Panel - Network and Internet - Network and Sharing Center - Change adapter settings
    TAP Adapter
    --If the adapter shows connected after receiving the error, right click on the adapter and select 'disable'. Then, right click again and select 'enable'.
    --If the TAP adapter shows 'disabled', simply right click and select 'enable'.

    --If the TAP adapter does not show on the list in Windows Vista or 7, go to the Start Menu - OpenVPN - Utilities. Right click and run as administrator on 'Add a New Win 32 TAP Adapter'.

    --If the steps above do not correct the problem or you just want to clear it from scratch, reinstall the OpenVPN software. . Be sure to uninstall the old version before re-installing. To uninstall, go to the 'Start Menu' and select the 'OpenVPN' tab and then select 'uninstall'.

    NOTE: This to troubleshoot installation or connection issues

    Disable UAC in Windows 7

    Sometimes disabling the UAC in WIndows 7 will correct installation or connection issues with the Personal VPN software.
    To disable the UAC:
    1) Go to 'Start' and enter 'UAC' in the search bar.
    2) Click on 'Change User Account Control Settings'. You will see the screen below. Slide the slider down as shown to 'never notify' and hit 'OK'. Reboot the computer.

    Disable UAC Vista

    Vista has a feature called UAC (User Account Control). The UAC prevents programs running under administrator accounts from having administrator access. This feature causes OpenVPN to not run properly which is why you have to right click and run the application as administrator. In some cases, Vista is configured in such a way that the 'Run as administrator' command is ignored. Should this occur, follow the directions below to allow administrator function. In addition, disabling the UAC for your user account will allow you to launch OpenVPN by a normal double click as opposed to a right click and 'Run as administrator'. Eessentially, it makes Windows Vista behave like Windows XP in this regard.
    Disable UAC for your user account as follows:
    1) Open Control Panel.

    2) Under 'User Account and Family Safety', click on the 'Add or remove user account'.

    3) Click on your user account.

    4) Click on the 'Go to the main User Account page' link.

    5) Under 'Make changes to your user account', click on the 'Turn User Account Control on or off' link.

    6) Under 'Turn on User Account Control (UAC) to make your computer more secure', click to unselect the 'Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer'. Click on the 'OK' button.

    7) You will be prompted to reboot your computer. Do so when ready.
    After rebooting, you may have to reinstall the software for the drivers to register properly.
    In some cases, Vista is not configured in the standard mode and these options will not show up in the Control Panel. If this occurs, do a Vista help search for 'UAC' and follow the steps as shown below:
    A) Select the 'Help and Support' tab.

    C) Select 'Turn User Account on or off'.

    D) Click 'Click to open User Accounts'.

    This will take you to the same place as step 5 above. Proceed from there.

    Change DNS settings
    Changing DNS entries on Microsoft Windows 7
    To change your Personal VPN DNS entries on Windows 7 (also Vista and XP):

    Go to Start - Control Panel - Network and Internet - Network and Sharing Center - Change Adapter Settings
    For Vista (Control Panel - Network and Sharing Center - Manage Network Connections)
    For XP (Control Panel - Network Connections)
    You will see a screen similar to this:

    Right-click on the adapter you wish to change the DNS for then click on 'Properties'
    The following screen will appear:

    Double-click on 'Internet Protocol Version 4' as shown by the red arrow
    The following screen will appear:

    Click on 'Use the following DNS server addresses'
    Enter the 2 DNS addresses we provide as shown by the red arrows
    Click on 'OK'
    Click on 'OK' again
    Repeat the above steps for all the adapters that you need to change based on our instructions to you.
    Reboot the computer
    To return to your original settings, repeat the process and check the "Obtain DNS server address automatically" button?

    All Users:

    -- "Cannot resolve host address: [NO_DATA] The requested name is valid but does not have an IP address ..."

    This error in the Openvpn log indicates that DNS (Domain Name Resolution) is not properly resolving the server name and translating it to an IP address it can use. This can be due to several causes but most commonly is due to DNS poisoning in some countries that censor web sites. In essence, the DNS servers in these countries either refuse to resolve the name or provide the wrong IP address leading to a dead link.

    This can be easily resolved by switching the DNS servers on your computer to international ones outside of your country.

    There are many free DNS servers to choose from and all of them will fix the issue. Some common ones are:
    Google DNS - 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
    OpenDNS - 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
    Verizon - 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.3 and 4.2.2.4
    If you wish you can mix these up when setting your DNS. For example use one of the Google servers and one of the OpenDNS servers.
    For users outside North America we recommend you use either Google DNS or OpenDNS.

    When changing your DNS servers be sure to change all network adapters you are using. This can include your wireless adapter, your Ethernet adapter and in cases where you are on a PPPoE (also shown as PPP) network the PPPoE adapter.
