Why do people think smart grid wireless communications are a good idea?

I agree that smart grid communications are ideal for 21st century. But how far & extent we can use this in our professional life? Any security threats? I am a recent graduate on Telecom Industry and I need some more information about smart grid & its technology features. Please don't mind about my questionnaire!!!
