MANILA, Philippines - Dondon Hontiveros rained triples in overtime to complete Gilas Pilipinas' conquest of New Zealand's Wellington Saints, 92-88, at the William Jones Cup on Friday.
The nationals fought their way out of a 16-point deficit before finishing off New Zealand in the extra period to log their fourth victory in the tournament at the Xin Zhuang Gymnasium in Taiwan.
Gilas was staring at a 41-57 deficit when Jason Castro sparked a scorching run that cut New Zealand’s lead to just two points, 72-70.
Castro’s jumpers and a series of put-backs by Asi Taulava tied the score and forced the overtime, 78-all.
Hontiveros then took over during the extra time, nailing three booming triples that pushed the nationals ahead, 87-84.
After Taulava’s shot underneath the basket, the straight shooting Cebuano iced the game with a couple of free throws that effectively put the New Zaleanders away.
Castro topscored Gilas with 22 points, while Hontiveros ended up with 21 to lead Gilas Pilipinas, which improved to 4-2 in the tournament.
Abueva and Sonny Thoss added 11 each, while Taulava had 10 markers to go with his 6 rebounds.
Bryan Davis led the way for New Zealand with 31 points, while Bruscoe added 17.
