GOEMON IS ACTUALLY A REAL GUY

Most of us loved this 1960s manga and 1970s anime LUPIN III here in the Philippines since they first aired on GMA in the late 90s, which went having a tribute series which starred Richard Gutierrez.

A fun fact that revolves around Lupin III is that of GOEMON ISHIKAWA XIII, the silent, shirasaya katana-wielding companion of Arsène Lupin III, Daisuke Jigen and Fujiko Mine.

Goemon is the thirteenth generation of renegade samurai, a descendant of the historical figure Goemon Ishikawa. He is usually quiet and participates in Lupin's exploits less frequently than Jigen.

His "ancestor," Goemon Ishikawa, was a semi-legendary Japanese outlaw hero who stole gold and valuables and gave them to the poor, similar to Robin Hood. Goemon is notable for being boiled alive along with his son in public after a failed assassination attempt on the civil war-era warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Despite this, Goemon was able to save his son by holding him above his head. His son was then pardoned by Hideyoshi. A large iron kettle-shaped bathtub is now called a "goemonburo" ("Goemon bath").

Goemon's legend continues to live on, often with greatly exaggerated ninja skills, in contemporary Japanese popular culture, one of which is Goemon Ishikawa XIII.

Lupin III was written and illustrated by Kazuhiko Kato under the pen name of Monkey Punch. The story follows the adventures of a gang of thieves led by Arsène Lupin III. Lupin and his gang travel throughout the world to s†éál treasures and escape from the law.

Arsène Lupin III is the grandson of Arsène Lupin, the gentleman thief who appears in a book series of detective fiction/crime fiction novels written by French writer Maurice Leblanc, as well as a number of non-canonical sequels and numerous film, television such as Night Hood, stage play and comic book adaptations. Though he is a master thief, Lupin's traits and characteristics can be paralleled to that of Ian Fleming's James Bond. If this idea is used, then we might say Lupin III's nationality is French.

Though Lupin III [the anime] is still a popular household name in the Philippines, all of us Filipinos do not know that there is a misnomer we've made about him. It was the pronunciation of his surname. We generally pronounce Lupin as [lu-PEEN], but in French it is actually [lu-PAHN]. That's why in Japan the Japanese call him RUPAN SANSEI, meaning Lupin The Third.
