Globe, Samsung issue IoT app challenge to developers

Discussion in 'Globe Telecom & Touch Mobile' started by aregee, Aug 4, 2015.

  1. Digital lifestyle purveyor Globe Telecom and global technology leader Samsung Electronics team up to challenge the creativity and skills of Filipino developers in coming out with innovative Android apps that can demonstrate Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities.

IoT is taunted to be “the next big thing” as growing affordability of new technologies allows more devices and everyday objects to get connected to the internet or other networks.

Thus, for the second year of the Singtel-Samsung Regional App Challenge, focus will be on IoT and how it can improve healthcare and general lifestyle. The competition aims to identify innovative startups in the region, help them accelerate their app development and connect them with operators within the Singtel Group which Globe is part of.

“We are thrilled to bring the competition again to the Philippines, thus, we have begun the search for startups and developers to join us for this year’s challenge. We’re looking for apps and solutions that will touch individual consumers using IoT technologies,” said Anne Michelle Santos, Globe Labs Product Manager for Digital Media. Globe Labs is the developer community of Globe.

Cris Concepcion, Head of Content and Services, Samsung Philippines, on the other hand, said: “We are delighted that the App Challenge is happening again this year; not only does it pave closer collaboration between Samsung, Singtel and Globe, but it also brings local Filipino developers closer to the technologies that are defining the way we live now. These collaborative venues allow us to fully align as we prepare ourselves for the Internet of Things. ”

Two teams will be chosen to represent the Philippines in the final competition in Jakarta, Indonesia where they will battle against winners from other countries to vie for the Best App. Aside from the all-expense paid trip, they will also be invited to attend a mentorship program in Singapore. Each winning team will receive USD 1,000.

Meanwhile, the winner of the regional challenge will receive S$10,000 cash prize, marketing support from the Singtel Group of operators for their winning idea, the opportunity to access the Group’s mobile customer base of over 550 million across 25 countries and prime product placement on Samsung content and services platforms.
Local developers are given until August 12 to submit their ideas. The appsshould be 80-90 % finished but not launched commercially yet. They will be judged based on concept, 30%; innovation and uniqueness, 40%; essential value and utility, 15%; and key features, 15%.

Those who will make it to the top 10 will be called for final pitching on October 10. Criteria for judging are as follows: general appeal, 30%; innovation and uniqueness, 30%; essential value and utility, 30%; completeness, 10%; and presentation, 15%.
